Friday the 13th and a full moon

Must be driving superstitious lycanthropes nuts.

Okay, so I was up until midnight doing some Briarholt RP, and some ... uhm ... suggesting to the code happy people on GreyScans. The result is that Felix is working away on one of the things I /really/ want to see done. Yay! And Aleriel is dealing with the other. Oh, this just so entirely makes my day. It's good to have capable friends. Thank you both!

And we have an unfinished scene or 4 that I need to get done eventually. So, whatelse is new?

Personally, I'm currently working on the MountCoast City map. This will probably help Felix with his coding. Or at least, it might. We can figure out the DNS server type thing anyway. I'm curious to know how much this will slow things down, Felix. If at all. Anyway, once the map is together and online, we can get the building going. This works for me, and a few others I can name. ;)

See, I have two choices when it gets to be October. I can either get depressed, or I can get busy.

Guess which one I'm choosing?

In other news, there isn't any really. My Mom has the flu. I have a vicious headache today that won't go away. And I don't want to be at work. Other than that, things are great. Think I'll buy a lottery ticket. Maybe it will win. ;) After all, today is a double good luck day.

And psionics definitions/descriptions is in progress. Really it is. ;)

Hey Reefster? Does your kitten have a name yet?

So all in all, my brain is going a mile a minute on the event, on Greyscans, and on Realmwalkers ... plus a few other sidelines.

*beams* Okay, people... are you ready for this?

As for that code..

Once the building is being done, we'll need to assign numbers. Numbers need to be unique.
That's important.

Don't wait on this code to open the game, because it could take months. :o)

Re: coding

[identity profile] damara.livejournal.com 2000-10-13 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry about it, Felix. Yes, I want the code. Sure, we can assign unique numbers. Can I pick any numbers I want? And the names for the areas and such? Just the area, sub area and specific room you need, yes? Cause you know, i can set that up ahead of time, and get it put in as we redesc/build and so forth. Not a problem.

*grin*

Inquiring minds want to know.

Oh, and we can use some temporary stuff while you're doing the coding if we need to. Like signposts or something.

Chargen note ... we don't need to redo the whole thing, except for the few things that Ky mentioned to you way back. Cause we only have one race ... humans. Oughta work, no?

Hmm..

I'm too fuzzy ATM to think much on the routing.

But I think we'd need to work some stuff out before building was done - at the looking-at-the-map stage.

As for chargen.. well, I was proposing a rather different one.
I got into a nice thread with Stef about it on the Spamboard...

A chargen like that is quick and easy to impliment - I made Scions' in a weekend.

Anyway, I need to stop now. :o)

Re: coding

[identity profile] insaint.livejournal.com 2000-10-13 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*grins*

When I'm told I've to modify my code I usually end up re-writing it anyway.. Though in this case that's entirely up to Felix :)

Re: coding

[identity profile] damara.livejournal.com 2000-10-13 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs*

I don't care. All I know is Ky had found a couple things that didn't work quite the way we'd envisioned. So she posted about them.

*shrugs*

We let you guys fix them how you will.

Oh, and Felix, if it's a cab system, then it stays on the road rooms. Should make things easier, really. Fewer DNS addys.

Re: coding

*ponders*

Hmm.

Every location still needs a number.

Having to stick to roads just makes it harder :o)

(Although in a well-designed system, roads should be the quickest way from place to place anyway)

Re: coding

[identity profile] damara.livejournal.com 2000-10-14 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, if you only have to get to the corner of Tannery and Bailey to get to 3 different stores, then wouldn't it be easier to somehow link those stores to the corner of Tannery and Bailey? So that the dns lookup gets you the ip address for that corner? And then there would be fewer IP addys to worry about, wouldn't there. In effect, you'd only have to worry about getting from street to street. Does that make sense at all?

*mutters*

Thanks to wibbble.org.uk loosing email I never saw these comments 'til I was bored and went looking for something random to add. ;o)

Hmm..
Yeah, that would work, I suppose. Although it them limits us to cabs and the like. You can send you're little search probe into the same room as Player-X, since they might be in the living room of the apartment complex on Street-Y...

Re: coding

[identity profile] damara.livejournal.com 2000-10-15 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
*blinkblink* Oh.

Now there's a concept.

People find and so forth? But then, that means there's some method (IC'ly) of identifying where people are, like a code chip or something implanted. No?

I'd almost rather people have to do a +where and then tell the cab where to take them. As in .... the +where tells you the player is in the living room, apt 302, SeaCoast apts. So you tell the cab to take you to SeaCoast apts, and it takes you to Santiago St., which is right outside the main entrance to SeaCoast apts. Besides, what if the player they're searching for is on the Lunar Colony ... then the Mountcoast cab should take them to the ferry port so they can get to the shuttle port on the island offshore.

Of course, this could lead to us needing 2 sets, couldn't it? Hmm. Not sure if Lunar City will be big enough to require it's own cab system. Possibly not.

Should we start a new thread on the spamboard with this?

Re: coding

Depends how big a modification.

In this case it would probably would require a re-write, since all the information in Greyscans/Aquatus' chargen is Aquatus-based.

For something smaller I'd just make changes and keep the same underlying system

Re: coding

[identity profile] damara.livejournal.com 2000-10-14 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, most of the stuff in Aquatus chargen could be used in Greyscans chargen too. If not all. The magic and cybernetics would have to be apped for separately anyway. Or at least on separate docs, even if at the same time. So ... it seems to me that the chargen doesn't really need a lot of changes, so long as it works okay.

Re: coding

Most of the Aquatus chargen was in the output, to be honest.
Whic needs total re-working on the grounds of being crap, now that I look at it.

I say look over what I proposed and what Bestian and I argued over. Ignore that we have anything already.

Do you think that type of chargen is better than the existing one?

Huh?

Actually... what I wanna know is...

If we get a virtual server up and running for our realmwalkers.com website, can we host the game on it directly and screw paying another hosting service??

Honestly, you have much more chances of hosting the website/domain name on Mudservices or whatever other MU* host. Website hosts (especially free ones) don't allow running processes that are left when the user logs off.. nevermind the fact that you need shell access, open port, blah.

Now, hosting the website on Mudservices is much more doable. Though they require you to register the domain name with specific registrar (don't ask me. I too find that annoying). You can transfer domain names between registrars, though. Can't remember if you have to pay for that though. Logic suggests that there should be a fee of some sorts.

Re: busybusybusybusybusybusybusybusy...

[personal profile] wibbble 2000-10-13 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends what she means by 'virtual server'.
Some places give you a /real/ virtual server, including root access.

If greyscans ends up on one of those, then hosting the game from there will /not/ be a problem.
In fact, you could do pretty much anything you liked on it.

Of course, that's probably not what she meant. :o)

Re: busybusybusybusybusybusybusybusy...

[identity profile] insaint.livejournal.com 2000-10-13 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm.. I'd still say there'd be a 99% chance they don't allow running background processes. Though wait.. you mean a virtual server as in a dedicated machine? If so, it's not called a virtual server to start with ;P Oh, and it'd cost much more than it's worth for Realmwalkers/game's needs anyway. Cheaper to pay for hosting :)

Re: busybusybusybusybusybusybusybusy...

[personal profile] wibbble 2000-10-13 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It /is/ a 'virutal' server.
With the right hardware you can run multiple OSes on one machine.

I think one of IBM's Big Iron manged to run several thousand 'virtual' machines, running a seperate Linux on each one.

With a server like that, you get a set chunk of memory, disc and swap. They'll probably set most things up for you, but you can do pretty much whatever you like - including stuff that requires root.

Have I mentioned yet how much I want one of those cirtual server accounts? ;o)

Re: busybusybusybusybusybusybusybusy...

[identity profile] insaint.livejournal.com 2000-10-13 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that's what you mean.. Hrm. Never heard of such things, really, but sounds appealing. Still, I think we'd have to ask the host whether we can run stuff or not. *shrugs* Far less hassle to park the domain with Mudservices (if you don't count that Mudservices can't really be trusted after the stunt they pulled a bit ago).

Speaking of.. how long does RS have till it gets shut down for non-payment?

Re: busybusybusybusybusybusybusybusy...

I wouldn't stay with Mudservices.
I certainly wouldn't jump through hoops to transfer a domain to them.
Hell, I just wouldn't transfer it full stop.

Find a new host.

Does the current domain host give you (and I'm speaking to Sin here, since I know she'll get this too) access to the zone file? If it does you can set it up like I did for Century, where century.wibbble.org.uk points at Century's host.

As for RS.. shit, I've no idea.
