Self Appraisals are really difficult and should be so much easier to do. Why is it I have so much trouble taking a good long professional look at myself and my work?

Because you're too close to it?
Most people find it hard to be object about the things that they're closely attached to, and most people are closely attached to themselves and their work. :o)

All I can suggest is that you sit quietly and try to think over what you've done in the past

All I can suggest is that you sit quietly and try to think over what you've done in the past <however long the apraisal's for> and think about the things that you took as personal triumphs in your work and personal failures, and put those down.

I hope there's more triumphs than failures. :oD
