Family Tree.

Ryan's mother is an only child. In the grocery store, she met her husband's only sister's mother's only son.

What relation is this person to Ryan?

That's really confusing, but wouldn't it be his father? If the relationship of this son to Ryan isn't his father, then I'm stumped.

There is nothing in there that explains that the mother is the mother of both children. My family for example, it wouldnt work with my brother who shares only the same father with me.

This being so, there are two answers logically.
1.) Father
2.) Half Cousin

And furthermore, I agree with the statement below.

My brother is indeed only sharing one parent with me biologically, he is still fully my brother. I'd never think to add the term 'half' in front of the word.

The answer they want you to give is 'father', but it might be 'uncle'.

Her husband and his sister might have the same father, but different mothers, in which case the sister's mother's son wouldn't be the husband. If the sister's mother's son had the same father as the husband, he would be the husband's half-brother, and thus Ryan's uncle. If it was a different father, then, uhh, I don't think there'd be any blood relation, but the odds are Ryan would call him 'uncle' anyway.

Perhaps, but 'sister' is still an accurate description of her. Half-sister would be a more complete description, true, but 'sister' alone is not inaccurate. ;o)
