Just because

It was only when the van came to a complete stop that they noticed it. Alice and Evan pulled the white van off the highway and into the rest station, Alice pushing her glasses up over her nose and leaning forward a little bit as the freezing drizzle pelted her windshield. Evan practically leapt out of his seat, the passenger side door opening swiftly so that the cold wet drops hit his face and his throat, causing him to hunch up into his jacket. He ran a hand through his brushcut dark brown hair, feeling the clumps of wet snow already forming. The weather was absolutely miserable. He trudged around to the back of the van, and his blue eyes widened with shock.

"Uhm, Alice? We've got a problem," he said.

"What do you mean, we have a problem?" Alice replied, automatically turning to look through the window to the back of the van. Oh. Right. Seeing the big plywood board reminded her that they'd blocked the back of the van off from the front. She couldn't see anything. She pocketed the keys and got out of the van herself, stepping around to where Evan was still standing, snow flakes swiftly turning his hair white and no doubt her own matching locks as well.

As she stepped around to the back, her eyes widened to match her brother's. "Oh crap. This is not good," she whispered.

"That's what I was trying to tell you," Evan said, a bit of exasperation in his tone as he gestured towards the van, along with its wide open back doors.

A black and orange striped construction pylon came rolling across the exit ramp, fetching up against the cement barrier the van was parked next to. Evan and Alice stared at each other, and then into the back of the definitely empty van.

"Oh god, Evan," Alice asked fervently, her tones hushed. "Where do you think they've gone?"
