You might want to try a Corolla as well. I hear they get decent mileage and they last pretty much forever.

Accords are nice. I'd try a Civic if it's a "grown-up" model like a hybrid -- something that a typical 18-year-old wouldn't get. Look into the safety reports, too, and see if Civics can still be easily broken into or if there have been improvements.

Also, Kias have stepped up their quality as well. I'd stay away from Rio (it's the smallest and doesn't have some of the structural safety features that other models have), but something like a Spectra might fit your needs.
