Before I forget - 9 months until I finish this MBA thing. I'm starting, just starting mind, to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

And did I mention that I actually finished the cross stitch piece I was working on? I've decided to give it to Mom for her birthday. Now I'm just starting a new piece I can give to Dad for Christmas. Yeah, that works. Course, I'm not going to say Christmas of which year!

Severe thunderstorm watch today and into the evening. Might not be online tonight, folks. Just in case.

"I swear to speak no word that is not true, not to use the One Power to make a weapon that one man may use against another, and to never use the One Power as a weapon except in self defence, defence of another Aes Sedai or my warder." Or something like that. Interesting vows, they are, all things considered. Wouldn't it have been better to swear "I swear to act honorably in all that I do and to serve the Light?"

Might have made for a much shorter story though, I suppose.

Well, "acting honorably" is extremely subjective. I think they would be trying to be as specific as possible. It's usually a good thing to be precise in oaths (and wishes :)).

Then again... It could just be Robert Jordan being a long-winded bore, as usual.

True enough. Though "acting honorably" isn't actually that subjective, at its core.

I suppose they could have just tried the golden rule (even if it is a white tower!) " I swear to always treat others as I wish to be treated."

But of course, there's still issues when it comes to sick people. The thing is - it doesn't matter what the oath is really. Sick people are still sick people.

Yes, but when you have access to magics that can enforce an oath, you want to be as specific as possible. :)

You wouldn't want to be bound to a vague, broad oath and have some higher power smite you when your interpretation is a little different.

Uhm, I hate to break it to you... but they already have that. :)

Hey, I'm figuring to stick with ideal situations here. ;)

Fair enough... hrm...

Okay then, what would be the ideal oaths?

Like I said, precise ones. I don't have the brain power at the moment to work out specifics. Mind you, when it comes down to it, I think that binding one to an oath via magics is a bad idea to start with.
