Rhetorical questions or not, I'm gonna offer my 2 cents, since I never know when to shut up.
I think that problem is reasonably well solved with the use of friends-only posts and/or custom filters. That way you know who you're sharing with (and who to kill if the information is leaked out), and avoid aggravating those who shouldn't see it.
The downside being that you have to figure out what to filter how. It's a pain. Same goes for continual disclaimers along the lines of 'when I say X, I don't mean Y, so those of you who think I said Z, think again.'
Still, the whole "my journal! mine!" mentality is all well and good until you (general 'you', not 'you, damara') realize that if you wouldn't say something to a friend in real life, chances are saying it on LJ would not be a good idea either. Give and take, that's what it is. Plus a few custom filters for really close friends.
