On Cats

So, Mom dropped Merlin off on Tuesday evening. Which was cool. He's a pretty cat too, though not so pretty as Taliesin. And we figured it should be okay, because Chey and Pach already know him. They lived in his house for two years or so.

Merlin, however, was not impressed with this trip. So much so that he had a little accident in his travel kennel. Whoops? He's never done that before, and I'm sure his visit at my house was not at all helped by the fact that his arrival was instantly followed with the first bath of his life. And he is 7 years old. He's the sort of cat that goes outside, and well, he's never needed one before.

Anyway, the poor bug (that's what I nicknamed him when he was a wee tyke. Bug. It's stuck.) Merlin-bug. You know, goofy stuff like that. Anyway, he decided not to come out of the basement for a while, until Mom went down to get him.

Taliesin hissed at him. I'm impressed - I've never seen Taliesin hiss like that. *grins* He is a cat after all, if a wussy one. Chey and Pach hissed too, when he got too close. It was somewhat amusing to watch Merlin as he finished drying himself out, hanging out with the people, away from the other cats. Then Mom left, and I went upstairs. Merlin decided to hide under my desk.

Taliesin was less than impressed. In fact, Taliesin left, and I ended up with Merlin in my room, looking for attention, while the other cats went off to do their own thing. Funny, that. At bedtime, the cat who jumped up on my bed first was Merlin. He never does that at my parents' house. Guess he's more than a little bit freaked out. Anyway, the next thing I hear is a hiss, and then Merlin vacates. Tal did too. Everything went quiet, and the night was peaceful.

Wednesday morning - Yawn, blink. Yes, it's morning. Darn.

No cats in my room, that I can see. So I head all bleary eyed downstairs to count noses, and feed the brats. There's Chey, there's Tal, there's Pach. Where the heck is Merlin?

Off on a search I go, and eventually I located him at the very back of my walkin closet. He's found a nice litte spot between two suitcases, that he thinks is absolutely perfect, not to mention safe. Well, this works for me, since at least I know the other brats won't be picking on him too much. Got ready and went to work, leaving him in the closet. (Don't even start in on the jokes about Merlin coming out of the closet.)

I went out for dinner at my Aunt Karen and Uncle Tony's. It was fun. Karen and I get along really well, and I got to see my cousins Angela (who will be starting her last year at U of T in September) and Ashley (who will be starting her first year at Laurentian in September). We had a very fun conversation, and I didn't leave until 10:30pm. You will all be pleased to note that no deer jumped on my car this time.

Aunt Karen has a fabulous garden. She gave me a rose plant (from my Mom and Dad's house in Nova Scotia. Well, her rose was cut from one there, and she gave me a cutting off hers. The thing is, that rose was planted by my Grandmother, so it's cool. She also gave me a couple of other plants and of course I'm already forgetting the names. Evening Primrose, I remember. Zabrina, I think. Spotted dog (or lungwort or something like that). And one other, that I have lost the name of. Darn. She'll be so disappointed. Anyway, they're home, but not planted yet. That's something we'll have to figure out in the near future, so the plants survive. Oh, one of the plants is from my great aunt Paulette - my other Grandmother's sister. This is cool too.

Roots. In more ways than one.

She has this really cool lily too - it's like a day lily, only it's called Dad's Best Purple. I've never seen such a thing, but it's lovely. I want one. She says if she can get it to multiply, she'll grow me one. Way cool.

Anyway, got home, counted kitty noses. All four cats came out to see me. This is good. Nobody's hurt or anything. There was a little hissing, and I noticed that Merlin is now growling back at them. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

Went upstairs to bug Pam, and discovered that my friend Grant wants to know if we can catsit his kitty the first week of August. Poor Anahita. I can't imagine saying no. Mind you, since Merlin will be leaving August 4 or August 5, it's not so bad. But ... 5 cats?! I'll have to find out just when Grant needs us to watch his cat, to be sure.

Life... Yeesh. This is getting rather funny, in a lot of ways.

Then in the middle of the night, I woke up - it happens, though I usually sleep all the way through. No cats on my bed. How bizarre. I got up, and there was a cat on the mattress that's still on the floor at the foot of my bed. Taliesin. I made my way to the washroom, and had a "whoops, fur under foot. Eep! That's a cat!" moment. Apache was not happy to be stepped on, even though I didn't actually squash her or anything. She decided to leave, but Cheyenne was coming in the door and Merlin had to come out of the closet to see what was going on. Oh boy. Well, I ignored them, and went back to bed. I think after the hissy fits and growling were over, they all went back to their respective corners.

This morning? Merlin was in the closet, Taliesin came into the room when I started moving, and so did Cheyenne. When I fed treats, all 4 came for them - Merlin learns fast. ;)

I wonder what tonight will bring.
